Introducing Boring Studio

Runway alternative

An alternative to Runway
that stops when you stop.

TheBoringApp is a Runway alternative that runs Veo 3 Fast and sells finished videos outright instead of a monthly plan. Prompts, rewrites and still-frame previews are free with no credit card, videos start at $0.80 each, and nothing is watermarked or expires.

Runway meters you in credits priced by the second, so every experiment - including the ones you throw away - draws down the balance. Here the experimenting is the free part and only the finished video costs anything.

What Runway does differently

Runway is built by Runway and sold this way: a one-time free credit grant, then paid monthly plans. Monthly subscription with a per-month credit allowance.

Its free tier: A one-time credit grant that does not refill, with watermarked output. Spend is counted in credits, priced per second of generated video.

None of that is unreasonable - it is the standard shape for a product where generating is expensive and users retry a lot. The cost of that shape is that your experiments are billable, so the exploring part of the work is the part you ration.

The trade we made instead

We render a single still frame from your prompt first and show it to you free. The clip is generated from that frame, so approving the still is approving the video - and everything up to that point costs nothing: the account, the prompt writing, the rewriting into cinematic direction, and 3 regenerations of the still per clip.

That moves the metering to the one step where you already know what you are buying. You are never paying to discover what the model did with your sentence, which is where most of a credit balance actually goes.

Videos are then bought outright: $5 for 5 videos up to $20 for 25, or $0.80 each. No subscription, no card on file, nothing to cancel, and no balance that resets at the end of a month.

When Runway is the better choice

If you generate video most weeks, a subscription is simply cheaper per output than buying packs, and the monthly allowance stops being a constraint and starts being good value. We are the wrong tool for a full-time production workflow and would rather say so.

Runway is also a broader product than this one. If you need editing, longer runtimes, model choice or the surrounding toolchain, that is a real gap on our side, not a positioning difference.

What we do not have: any free finished video. Clips are 8 seconds, a project caps at 10 clips for 80 seconds in one piece, and finished videos are kept 13 days before you need to have downloaded them.

Questions

Is there a free Runway alternative?
This one is free up to the render and not beyond it. Signing up, writing prompts and rewriting them are free, unlimited and need no credit card, and every clip gets a free still preview with 3 free regenerations. The finished video is the paid step, from $0.80. There is no free finished video, which is worth knowing before you sign up rather than after.
Is it cheaper than Runway?
It depends entirely on volume, and anyone who answers otherwise is selling. Buying videos outright is cheaper if you want a handful - a few videos and then nothing for two months costs you a few dollars and no monthly fee. A subscription wins once you are generating steadily, because the per-video cost of an allowance you actually use is lower than any pack price.
Do I need a subscription?
No, and there is not one to buy. Videos are sold in packs, bought once, and they never expire. Nothing renews, no card is kept on file, and there is no plan to cancel if you stop.
Are the videos watermarked?
No. Every finished video is a full-resolution download in the aspect ratio you chose - 9:16 or 16:9 - with no watermark and no branding added, whichever pack paid for it.
What model does it use?
Veo 3 Fast. We name it because a page that says "advanced AI" is usually hiding something cheaper, and because which model you are getting is the first thing anyone comparing tools wants to know.
Can I move work over from another tool?
There is nothing to import - you write the prompt here and approve the stills here. If you have prompts that already work elsewhere, paste them in: the free rewrite will adapt one into the cinematic direction this model responds to, and it costs nothing to try.
What happens if a generation fails?
It is refunded automatically and not counted against your balance. A failed render costs you a few minutes rather than a video.

Free to try. Paid to render.

No card, no credits to decode. Write, rewrite and preview as much as you like - you only pay once you approve a still.
